== Description ==
[[Nehrim:Fights in the Ostian Arena|Fights in the Ostian Arena]] can be started by reading one of [[Nehrim:The Arena|The Arena]] [[Nehrim:Letters, Notes, Notices and Posters|posters]] in [[Nehrim:Ostian|Ostian]] or just by entering the [[Nehrim:Ostian, Arena|Ostian arena]]. The locations for these posters are on one of the pillars just outside the prayer room in the market place and just outside the arena lobby door. These posters inform you of the location of the [[Nehrim:Ostian, Arena|Ostian, Arena]] and encourage you to participate. Accepting to join a fight has you join the Blue Team against the Yellow Team to fight to the death inside the arena.

Inside the arena barracks there are some Arena Fighters that offer skill improvements, such as [[Nehrim:Arena Fighter Jor|Jor]] and [[Nehrim:Arena Fighter Tirtan|Tirtan]]. [[Nehrim:Balgo|Balgo]], near the Board (where you accept to join the fights) sells armor for the fights and also offers training. After the 10th & 21st fight, Balgo's barter list will be upgraded to sell better and excellent heavy and light raiment armors for the arena matches. You can also check your statistics for the fights from the board.

To join a fight, activate the Board next to Balgo, and choose "Enroll in a fight". Find the arena armour nearby (on the table) or buy one from Balgo and then equip it to lower the gate nearby that leads to the arena. Inside the gate sits an [[Nehrim:Arena Fighter|Arena Fighter]] that can be used to practice against as he will respawn; however, there is no indication of this in-game. Once you are ready to fight, follow the bloody path and enter the door to the arena. After winning the fight, report back to the board for your prize money. The reward of the fight gets higher as you do more and more fights. Sometimes you will have to fight 2 or 3 arena combatants, or wild animals. Some fights have surprise opponents that are released after the official ones have been defeated. There's also some fights that you'll have another fighter as an ally. Once all 44 Fights have finished, the board ceases to function, meaning the player can no longer fight in the arena.

==Walkthrough==
Entering the arena requires the arena armor to be equipped. You can buy a simple heavy or light raiment from Balgo. To enter the arena, accept to join a match first and then equip the arena armor and head through the big gate where the dried blood can be seen. You can practice training with the arena fighter inside the gate as he respawns when killed to gain more confidence in your skills before entering the arena itself. Once you are ready, head up the hall and enter the door. The match will not start unless the armor is equipped. You can use this to your advantage to scope out the opponents before equipping it. Once the match starts, the arena armor turns into a quest item during the fight so it cannot be unequipped until after the fight. 

All participants aside from the animals are named arena fighters throughout the matches. All official yellow team members will wear either the light or heavy yellow raiment. Surprise Opponents' armor usually varies. One [[Nehrim:Arena Fighter|arena fighter]] is always present high up in the arena. There is no way to get his location and he is also invulnerable from arrows and spells. He serves as the horn blower and judge for the matches.
=== Arena Description ===
The arena is a circular stage with two exits on each end separated by two gates; one for the blue team, and the other for the yellow team. It is only possible to enter the blue team door. There is a static skull near the blue team door to differentiate between the two exits. Also, a secondary gate blocks the yellow team exit. Static spectators can be seen in the stands; they aren't actually NPCs but rather static textures that have an animation to them. On the edge of the arena spikes are installed but they don't damage the player at all. The two side gates cannot be opened. Behind the right side gate is a rope that leads to a log trap that cannot be accessed, however; the trap can be activated via the pillar just in front of this gate. Behind the left side gate are a few bones just out of reach. In the center of the area lies a bloody cage surrounded by 8 pillars. On the left side of the arena, a wooden walkway sits between three pillars. Three boxing bags are placed under the walkway where there is no fortification to provide an obstacle for opponents to pass. The wooden walkway does not really lead anywhere except higher up but one trap can be found here, the swinging log trap. The switches for it are behind the pillars. A spike cage trap exists at the end of the walkway that will kill anyone who touches it instantly so be careful. Another spike cage trap can be found on the right side of the arena near a brazier that behaves in the same way. Just in front of this trap lies a few bones and a rusty iron axe. Behind the right pillar facing the yellow team gate lies the switch for the swinging mace trap. On the ceiling are three cages that sometimes hold arena fighters that are released after the yellow team members are defeated.

==Notes==

* Additional individual information on [[Nehrim:Arena Fighter|Arena Fighter]]<nowiki/>s will be covered on that page to save space.
* You cannot loot your opponents nor your fallen teammates. You can loot their weapon if they drop them upon death. Animals cannot be looted as well.
* The arena will clean up corpses, traps and teammates after every fight.
* The arena gate will not open until you have the arena armor equipped. This goes for both the one in the [[Nehrim:Ostian, Arena|arena lobby]] and the one in the arena.
* You cannot change your armor once you enter the arena proper (past your team gate), as it becomes a quest item.
* To make the fights fair, it is not possible to hit opponents with spells or arrows at the start of the match before the match entry gate has a chance to close. This happens once the player is several steps away from it. Surprise Opponents are also immune to attack until they are released from their cages.
* During the matches, the arena gate on the opposing side will close if there are no fighters alive inside and if you move away from it. Be sure to loot any fallen weapons and/or shields before this happens!
* All arena fighters are part of the Arena [[Nehrim:faction|faction]], depending on what team they are on.
* There is a total of 44 fights in the game before you finish the quest. The last fight against the yellow champion is a tough one, but worth it! You'll get 5500 XP for killing the final champion and over 5000 gold in this fight alone plus 18500 gold for finishing the quest.
* Attempting to enroll in another fight after defeating the champion gives the message 'There are no more fights in the Ostian Arena.'

==Tips==

* Before you start, take a look to the cages hanging from the ceiling. If they are filled with people, be prepared for a nasty (but weak) surprise attack once you finish all the "official" fighters.
* You can bring [[Followers]] from other quests ([[Handor the Axe Swinger]], [[Captain Dratis]], [[Kim]], [[Callisto]]) to help you.
* You can bring or summon Kim here to help fight for you depending on which main quest is active. However, they may attack your teammates, interfering with your statistics.
* Kim may end up drawing aggro against monsters before the fight has even started (if the player is not wearing the arena armor). If any teammates are there, they will also join in the early fight and may end up hurting the enemy through the arena gates.
* If Kim is still in the fighting area of the arena when you leave, they may get put behind the yellow's team gate in the next match if they don't teleport with you.

== Bugs ==

* The arena door in the barracks may never open due to the player not having the arena armor equipped while approaching it. It will still refuse to open after leaving the cell and coming back, even after 73 hours. This is why it is always '''best to save just before enrolling in a fight.'''
* Changing your armor before the main gate for the blue team in the arena lowers may add a permanent, quest-item arena raiment to your inventory.
* Occasionally, traps do not reset in between matches. This is usually caused by loading a save before a match after using the traps.
* Balgo's inventory will reset to the default inventory after 3 days, which prevents access to the better and excellent raiments. It is '''recommended that you buy these raiments as soon as they become available'''; otherwise you will permanently miss out on these armors. To add it back to Balgo's merchant container, open the console and type <code>prid 2308CD</code> , press enter, and then type <code>additem 23071X 1</code> , where X represents the last digit for the Editor ID in the Raiment Table.
* Note that adding [[nonplayable]] armor to someone or the [[player]] will not cause them to show up in the inventory, but will take up permanent [[encumbrance]] unless removed by the console using the <code>removeitem</code> command.
* Fight #14 - The fighting dog is invincible to all forms of attack except traps in the steam version. Use the console to kill it if traps are not successful.
* Fight #16 - The Arena fighter 232719 refuses to equip her staff and prefers to use hand to hand combat. A very minor issue.

* The red and yellow light armors only have 100 health compared to their heavy counterparts, which have 1k health. This makes opponents wearing these armors easier to kill. It is unknown if this was actually intended to be this way or just a typo.
* Fight #44 on the steam version would not start for me for whatever reason. The surprise encounters would aggro the player if they spotted him. If you sneak your way to the gate without getting spotted, nothing happens. I had to use the console to enter the ring and bring the fighters to me in order to fight ('''Eaglebyrd''' Dec 23, 2024).
