Or at least, this is what I would like to believe. Then again, anything is better than the scorching sun outside really. In a sad way, it is amusing to see myself lying here like this, ragged clothes, swollen feet and covered in heat blisters. Me, the grand explorer who wanted to show these smug high borns that he was destined for something greater. I will not delude myself - I will not escape this hell alive. I will not survive another day out there. If it's not the Bonerippers or Lost Ones taking my life, the sun surely will. The sun, eternal source of life ... but the way it can kill you when there is no shelter. The irony. It's all a matter of judgement.

I found it on the first day here. I crawled on the sand floor like an insect, my fingers nothing more than dried branches that searched every crack, every wall, every carcass for something edible. But the worst thing was the thirst.

And then, I found it - the stone. Like an icicle, it hung from the ceiling and with rhythmic monotony it oozed what I desired more than anything else in my life at that moment: water. Drop after drop.

I do not know where this water is coming from, but when the wetness dabbles my lips I truly feel like the gods themselves are kissing me. The stone is the anchor that stops this wreck that is my body to go down. But the stone is drying out. It always stops at the same hour - I cannot tell which hour, but I presume it is at night - the stream of life dries out for a time that seems like an eternity to me. And then it starts again as if nothing has ever happened.

Nonetheless, I have noticed something rather peculiar: Every time the stone is dripping and alleviates the burning in my throat, thoughts are starting to come to my mind in growing numbers. Thoughts of fleeing this place, thoughts of rescue, thoughts of setting foot in Ark, thoughts of laughing at my youthful folly that drove me to start this journey together with my brother.

Peculiar, is it not? During night, when the stone is resting, I feel nothing but the longing for water. I would give all of my worldly possessions, my left hand, even all of my dream in exchange for water.

While the stone is dripping, this longing fades into the background and the longing for my old self, my old dreams start to surface again.

It's all a matter of judgement.

The stone, however, continues to drip. It's the same spiel over and over. During night: burning thirst, yearning for water. During day: doubt, fears, hope.

The more time I spend in this stasis, this alternation, the more questions obtrude: Where would I be if I had never had water in the first place? Where would we be? Hope, dreams, fears, and doubt: they all would be possible if we all had a stone like this. Hunger and thirst reduce us to our most basic selfs and let everything else pale in comparison.

So what does this mean for life, I ask myself. Is it not our judgement that let's us see the situations we happen to be in as unfortunate?

I do not know. What I know is, that I will stop drinking.

It's all a matter of judgement.

I would be lying if I said that your last letter didn't hurt me. Is the talk of stable-lads and tomfoolish villagers really more important to you than mine?

Maya is doing well. Believe me, I wouldn't write it if it weren't so. Yes, she is still weak and cannot stay on her legs longer than a few hours, before the exhaustion gets to her - but things are looking up. Furthermore, I was able to test the new elixir sufficiently enough to treat her with it in a good conscience. It will help her to regain new strength, Taniysha, and I ensure you, you will hardly be able to recognize her afterwards.

So, for the last time I ask you: Trust me and be patient. You know, I would do anything for you and for her. Anything.

I cannot find words to describe how happy each of your letters make me feel. It is as if the warmth of your fingers would still be attached to them. But do not let me waste time and answer your question:

Our little one is getting better and better. The cool climate is doing her very well, and just a few days after our arrival here she already awoke from her coma. Her cheeks are becoming rosier every day, her breath more powerful. I am sure that during the next Star Summer's Night you will be able to enfold her in your arms.

Furthermore you wanted to know when you can move here. Heavy-heartedly I have to stave you off another few moons. Your presence here would put Maya's healing into danger, I beg you not to ask for the "why". - Believe me, the distance between us hurts me just as much as it hurts you. The Order is planning an excavation there soon (supposedly they are dealing with this mental illness - I'm not sure how it can be of help to search Pyrean ruins?), but the doors are still sealed. That's why it is important that I go there immediately. I'll call you as soon as there are news. I leave a second key, in case you want to meet me there.

I appreciate your concern, but - like always - I think, that you are worrying too much. Grandmaster Arantheal himself approved the mission, and don't forget that two keepers of the second signet are accompanying us. Besides, this is a good opportunity to impress the masters. Lambert, the only novice who was willing to accompany the infamous, cranky master Besara (alias the "broom") to an "expedition". Hearing it like that you forget, that we merely have to dust off some Pyrean urns at the suncoast.

My dear fellow Severikk,

I am writing to you a few last words. The Path might separate us two, so that we don't have the opportunity for a conversation. I see you afar, when I look down the flow. I moved into a room in the tower of Quellwacht. I see green fog rolling in the valley. I know that you will hold Goldenforst to the last man. Therefore I give thanks to you. And believe me, I would rather be down there then in this dizzy heights. The smell of insanity crawls through every chink.

How friendly these valleys seemed to be back then! When we, in a process of emergence, wanted to gift the inhospitable east to the people in the name of our holy lord - how ecstatic we were by this coarse beauty. And didn't we put in a little bit of elbow grease in good spirits, building stone by stone, first Goldenforst, then Wellwatch and finally building the mighty Thalgard to the skies? How gloomy it appears to me, here where the sun comes late and goes early, and where I see darkness approaching. Didn't we want to see, were we blind? What did Dal'Marak do?! It doesn't matter anymore, Thalgard fall into darkness, and we will follow soon.

We won't leave the Goldenforst anymore. The Shadow Pass will be overrun, and it won't be long, until these beasts will burst through the gate into this valley. I didn't get a message by Hail Malphas City for two days - I assume the worst. Nobody might manage to keep behind the mountain passes, because the path is closed by the ice of winter.

Yet the cannon beats still din to us from Thalgard, but the rotten winds already blow down our strong castellation - how sparse they avail us now! Two, maybe three days left.. Awful guises were seen, bloated and insane...

I executed the command to demolish Quellwacht, if we should get overrun. For us, dear Severikk, this means to stay here, until our way ends.

Tomorrow I will let bring canons, powder and munitions down, as much as I can do without. Stay strong, I think of you.
